Post 22 History

Post 22 was chartered by WWII and Korean Veterans on January 28th, 1968. They were made up of 57 Veterans that were looking for a place to call home, congregate and have fellowship with other Veterans.

They were looking to join a Veterans organization that supported other Veterans, their children and the communities they lived in. Their goal was to form a Post that was family friendly, where you could bring your Mother, Wives and children into and feel comfortable they would be safe and respected. Post 22 still holds those values and is known as one of the Friendliest Posts people have visited. We often hear that statement from other Legion members that visit our Post.

The basement of the “Hutch”, which was a bar across the street from our present Post, is where they held their organizational meetings in the beginning.

The first Post home was an Old Grange Hall built in 1920. It was located at 100th and Riverdale Road. The members painted it red and called it ”The Barn”. A SAL member once told me his gun safety class consisted of getting in the rafters and shooting pigeons with a 22.

The 2nd Post home was on 112th Ave. just east of Irma Dr. It’s now a brewery. They called this home “The Corral”.

Rumor has it, there were a few members hanging out at the Elks Lodge on Irma one night when they heard that the old tool rental shop at 11081 Irma Dr. was for sale. They purchased the building in 1984-85 remodeled it and named it “The Ranch”. This is our present home. Through hard work and running bingo sessions at the Bingo hall in the Garland shopping center in Northglenn, the members were able to pay off the building. They had a ceremony at the Post on June 16th, 1990 and burned the Mortgage and Deed.

The 1st Commander of the Post was Frank Lodge. In the next 50 years, Post 22 has had 38 Commanders. Numerous Officers, Auxiliary Presidents, Aux. members, SAL Commanders, SAL members and numerous Legionnaires have dedicated themselves and continue to dedicate themselves at Post 22 to ensure the traditions and visions of the Chartered Members of Post 22 are kept honorable and alive.
